June 22nd. Centerfire Rifle Match recap. Winds were deceptively light that Sunday evening, for

the 200 yard tournament . The only competitors who were fooled, were those who don`t

utilize wind flags,or use them well. Most assume ,if breezes appear placid at the firing line,

then the same must be true at the target 200 yards away.Competition has many benefits,

one is improving marksmanship,by repeating trigger pull, holding sight picture, and reading the wind.

It helps by being aware of the environment between shooter and target, especially while hunting.

Many argue that competition has no bearing on Hunting,as equipment;(Rifle,Ammo,Wind flags,

known distance,Stable front and rear rest, to name a few) is used in our matches, not while hunting.

Hunters should discipline themselves to shots they can make reliably, taking into account all the factors

that could cause a miss,or worse, end up with a wounded animal. Just because you can take the long

shot, doesn`t mean, it should be taken. Harvesting big game ,can make memories that last a

lifetime . Wounding an animal that you can never track down, can haunt you, just as long. Our matches

allow "Sighter Shots" (Targets shot for score, typically have sighter targets, that can be shot without

penalty). Almost all contestants shoot the sighter target first,to see how close they are,to point of aim,

the targets center or bullseye. That provides much information about the environment ,at

that moment, including Wind,Temperature ,Barometric Pressure, and Density Altitude from

the 3 previous factors added together. The other environmental factor, that`s a given, is the

distance to the target. Almost all, without exception, have their scope elevation dialed in

from the previous match, or like me,from the previous season. We may have our hunting

rifles sighted in for one distance, but I can`t get deer to show up at the exact yardage I`ve

got my cross hairs set for, then allow me a sighter shot,to see if I`ve guessed the wind correctly.

Learning to spot evidence of the wind, and its effect on each shot is learning to shoot on Kodiak Island.

The lightest average wind speed,on the Rock,is July, with 8 MPH.However the windiest month is when I

used to do my deer hunting, and that was December, with an average of almost 15 MPH or double of July.

It`s also learning to say "No Shooting at this distance today",when hunting. I refused to take a shot at

a Large Brown Bear ,over 20 years ago. The distance was fairly close too,but the wind was gusting over

50 miles per hour.In competition, all rounds in a course of fire, must be shot.In Centerfire Matches

that`s 25 shots for score,with a maximum possible score of 250 points,if all 25 shots hit the 10 ring.

"X s" or Bullseye`s are a Dot that`s 1/8th of an inch in diameter,at 200 yards,hard to see, let alone hit.

Course of fire for rimfire ,is 20 shots at 50yds,and 20 shots at 100 yds, total 40,and highest possible is 400 points.

There was enough wind to make it very challenging June 22nd,as currents at the targets were 180

degrees from those at the firing line, and although light ,it was enough to keep all of us from hitting

the center on demand. Longer distances do affect accuracy, both in vertical (gravity/velocity spreads)

and horizontal (winds/time of flight bullet is subjected to winds)

Both matches below were shot in light winds, but winds that were in opposite direction along the bullets

flight path. Six Shooters in first Centerfire Relay, with 10 points between 1st and 6th,that`s tight scoring pack.
